Hi Visitor E-Quipped to...Escape From the Anger TrapThis newsletter refers to Anger Management: Taming the Tiger!, a comprehensive article found on my website. November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This is an occasion for governments, international organizations and NGO’s to raise public awareness of violence against women….BUT it doesn’t have to stop at the organizational level. At the individual level each and every one of us can contribute towards eliminating violence against women. A simple, yet effective, way is by educating ourselves and our children about anger and anger management. |

Anger is Not the problem… Aggression is!Many people think of anger as a purely ‘negative’ emotion – an emotion that we should never feel. But anger is, in fact, just an emotion - one of a whole range of emotions that we should allow ourselves to feel if we want to experience a rich mental and emotional life. As Lyman Abbott said, “Do not teach your children never to be angry; teach them how to be angry.” Feeling an emotion is not the same as acting on the emotion. With anger we want to be able to feel it, without acting on it. When we act out inappropriately, we are aggressive and it is not ok to behave aggressively. We need to be able to feel angry, without mentally, verbally or physically hurting others in anyway. In other words, it is ok to feel angry, and tell someone we feel that way, but it is not ok to scream and shout at others, hit them or throw things at them, for example. We need to learn to manage our anger, so as not to act out aggressively. What Does Managing Anger Mean?Managing anger does not involve getting rid of all anger, but rather using our anger to enhance our lives. Anger comprises both negative and positive aspects. Anger management is about increasing the positive aspects and decreasing the negative aspects. What are the positive and negative aspects of anger? The physical effects of anger are damaging to our health, so if we want to avoid possible long term damage to our health we must be able to manage our anger. How does anger damage our health? How do we Manage Anger? In order to manage our anger we need to combine a number of different skills and techniques. We can manage our own anger by:
