Equipped to...Give Yourself a Break

This newsletter introduces Invest In Yourself, a comprehensive article found on my website.

August was Women's Month, and I hope that, while admiring the achievements of the country's more influential women, you also took the time to recognise your own achievements, appreciate your own worth and understand how valuable you are in the lives of the people you love.

However, this sense of self-worth shouldn't just be limited to one month a year. It's important to remember your value as a person every single day. Your needs and wants are just as important as anybody else's yet, as women, we are often guilty of neglecting ourselves in favour of taking care of everyone else. It's important to invest time in yourself every day – treat yourself like a VIP because that's exactly who you are!

With the exit of winter and the arrival of a brand new season, now is the perfect time to Spring Clean your life!

“I don’t have time for myself”

It doesn’t take a lot of time to reap a lot of reward! If you have 15 or 20 minutes, you have all you need to recharge and revitalise yourself! Here are a few ideas:

• Take a bubble bath. Light a few candles, put on some easy music, turn off the phone and relax! You’ll be amazed at the result!
• Buy your favourite magazine, make yourself a lovely cup of tea – in your best china cups - or pour a glass of wine, and relax on a comfy chair or couch while you read. Or take yourself off to your favourite coffee shop and spend some time with a latte and a good book.
• Phone a friend. Research shows that regular contact with friends lowers blood pressure and reduces stress. So make that call today.
• Exercise. Take the dog for a walk round the block, do 20 minutes of weeding or planting in your garden, put on some upbeat music and dance in your lounge…it’s all a great way to unwind, destress and invest in yourself.

“I feel guilty if I take time for myself”

Many women never put themselves on their own list of priorities because they feel guilty about taking some time for themselves. We need to let go of this guilt and accept our leisure time for what it is – a life-enhancing gift to ourselves. A little time spent each day doing what you want to do, instead of what you should do, is an invaluable investment in your life.

The benefits are immense:

• Inner peace and calmness
• Recharged batteries
• Valuable thinking time
• A greatly increased feeling of respect for ourselves
• Healthier, more balanced relationships
