Advanced Counselling Skills Course - Suicide

Suicide Counselling has two very specific and different dynamics:

  • counselling people left behind after a friend or loved one has committed suicide. Normal grief and bereavement counselling does not touch on the particular emotions and needs of people dealing with the aftermath of a suicide.
  • counselling those who want to kill themselves. Suicide prevention requires highly specialised knowledge skills.

This course is a thorough and practical introduction to this highly specialised area

This course is designed for:

  • Ministers and religious counsellors
  • Voluntary lay counsellors
  • Psychology students
  • BPsych students doing their internship as a Registered Counsellor

    Benefits of Advanced Suicide Counselling

    • Lay counsellors will improve their skills and effectiveness.
    • Psychology students will be able to confidently apply for practical experience, thus improving their chances of being accepted into a Masters programme.
    • BPsych students will learn vital practical skills to complement their theoretical training, and so gain confidence in their ability to counsel others.
    • People wanting to volunteer their services at trauma and crisis centres, churches and community centres will learn all the skills they need to do so.

        About the course

        • Prerequisites:
A knowledge of basic counselling skills is necessary, and as such this course is only open to people who have done my Basic Counselling Skills Course or equivalent (Subject to my review) course.
        • Theory and practice:
The course is both theoretical and practical - participants will have many opportunities to try out and practice the new skills they learn.
        • Sessions:
The Advanced Suicide Counselling Skills Course runs over a series of 4 sessions, of two hours each.
        • Content:
The course covers the fundamentals of suicide counselling, such as understanding causes and trends of suicide, behavioural clues to watch out for, debunking the myths surrounding suicide, style of approach and suggested interventions for suicide prevention. (See detailed course outline).
        • Group size:
Small group sizes ensure each participant receives individualised attention.
        • Notes:
A full set of course notes is included in the course fee.
        • Certification:
This is not an accredited course, so does not constitute an academic qualification. (Note: There are no known accredited counselling courses for lay counsellors in KwaZulu Natal). It will, however, fully equip you with all the skills required to do voluntary lay counselling. Participants will receive a certificate acknowledging they have successfully completed the course.
Please Note: Candidates must attend the full course to receive their certificate.
